Work has been completed on two Missouri American Water projects to upgrade water mains in Jefferson City, and the company said it has invested $550,000 to complete them.

Crews have replaced more than 525 feet of 4-inch cast-iron pipe with 8-inch PVC water main on Adams Street from East Capitol Avenue to East High Street. Company officials said this was the only stretch of main in the area not already served by an 8-inch main, so upsizing the old pipe will improve service and safety by increasing fire flow.

The company replaced 1,475 feet of 1950s era 6-inch cast iron with new 8-inch PVC on West McCarty Street from Ella Street to Hub Street. This stretch of main being replaced had a history of breaks.

“We’re seeing more main breaks as the pipes age. Obtaining capital for planned replacement projects helps prevent emergency breaks, which we know can be very frustrating for customers and local businesses,” Brent Haas, operations manager for Missouri American Water’s Jefferson City district, said in a news release.
