This year’s show, which takes place April 8 to 14, is expected to welcome about 600,000 visitors alongside 3,700 exhibitors from 63 countries.
With about 614,000 square metres of exhibit space, bauma 2019 is larger than Germany’s smallest town.
The municipality of Arnis in Schleswig-Holstein measures 450,000 square metres. The area occupied by bauma is about three times that of Munich’s Allianz Arena, which is home to FC Bayern.
During the construction of the show, more than 13,000 trucks and more than 600 heavyweight vehicles travel to the exhibition grounds. If they were to form a chain, the vehicles would stretch nearly 170 km.
Liebherr began building its three-storey, 14,400 square-metre booth on Oct. 20, 2018, equalling about 160 days for construction.
The Liehberr booth is the largest at the show followed by the Wirtgen Group with 12,960 square metres, and Caterpillar with 11,237 square metres. The area taken up by the three manufacturers equals more than five soccer fields.
As well, before the machines from Caterpillar and Putzmeister enter Hall B6, 108 additional roof supports will be installed below the entrance, so the floor can withstand the weight.
The heaviest machine on display at the trade show is Liebherr’s LR 1800 crawler crane. The machine weighs in at 1,070 tons, which is about the same weight as more than two dozen airplanes. Moving the crawler crane to bauma required 42 individual transport vehicles.
The second heaviest machine at bauma is Komatsu’s PC 4000 excavator, weighing in at 400 tons. The mining excavator is roughly the same size as a detached home.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, Bobcat’s E10e electric compact excavator is the smallest machine at the show. The 1-ton E10e measures 71 cm-wide and can fit through a doorway.
Bauma will welcome about 600,000 visitors from about 200 countries. That equals more countries than the 193 United Nations member states.
During the event’s “Super Saturday,” about 21,500 cars and 1,000 buses are expected onsite. As well, Super Saturday will host about 250 exhibitor trucks as well as 500 caravans.
The trade show also requires impressive staff numbers from exhibits with Liebherr bringing in 1,500 people alone. The Wirtgen Group arrives with more than 800 staff members.

On the last day of the show at 4:15 pm, bauma concludes with the traditional “beeping” off all the machinery on site. The “sound of bauma” is initiated by the German-based Mechanical Engineering Industry Association.
Also paying homage to the trade show, about 40 cranes have formed the bauma silhouette. During set-up, attention was to be paid to different crane heights to ensure they did not collide while recreating the silhouette.
