Turbie Twist Review: fast-drying hair towel that doesn’t damage strands

Insider Picks writes about products and services to help you navigate when shopping online. Insider Inc. receives a commission from our affiliate partners when you buy through our links, but our reporting and recommendations are always independent and objective. Is it just me, or do movies and television shows have a way of making the act of getting ready seem oddly glamorous? Picture it: girl hops out of shower. In a hurry, she flips over her head and wraps her hair in a giant bath towel. Then, she expertly multitasks, rubbing lotion on her legs, dabbing on foundation and powder, swiping mascara on her lashes, without any slips, all while balancing a giant towel on her head. In the unabridged version — aka reality — that picture is a little less pretty. Balancing a heavy towel atop your head while simultaneously trying to get dressed and ready for the day is not as easy as it seems. And, frankly, it can strain your neck and your strands, especially if you have fine hair and pull too tight to twist the towel.  Enter: Turbie Twist. The Turbie Twist is a hooded hair towel with a tapered design and elastic loop that stays secure and keeps your head comfy, all while helping your hai...

It’s true! New hospital to serve two rural communities | News

According to a press release issued Friday, October 11, MUSC Health received board approval to file a certificate of need (CON) to build a new replacement hospital, for no more than $50 million, to serve the health care needs of the Lower Florence County Hospital District and Williamsburg County. The new hospital is expected to be located on Route 52 on land donated by the Heath family. When the new MUSC facility opens, both Lake City Community Hospital and Williamsburg Regional Hospital will discontinue operations. “Seeing this project move forward is gratifying for all of our team members,” said Julie Floyd, chair of the board for Williamsburg Regional Hospital in the press release. “Since the historic flood that devastated our hospital building in October 2015, we’ve been serving patients through a temporary hospital, using modular housing. The MUSC Health replacement hospital will be a welcome solution and upgrade to the transitional facility.” Williamsburg Regional Hospital CEO Sharon Poston is excited about the venture. “I just wish it wouldn’t take three and a half years,” said Poston of the projected period to complete the facility. She said environmen...

The pitfalls of having a black toilet in Manteca given the city’s water is hard

If you remodel your bathroom and you happen to live in Manteca do not, I repeat, do not buy a black toilet. About seven years ago I was insane enough to remodel my house. There were practical things to take care of such as replacing a 1951 electrical panel and installing ceiling fans throughout the house. Most of it though was what one would call cosmetic. Between those items, some work in the laundry room and kitchen as well as the bathroom I managed to drop $30,000. If you have ever remodeled your home you know that the most expensive room square foot for square foot is the bathroom. In my case it was almost $12,000. To put this in perspective my bathroom is 9 feet by 5 feet or 45 square feet. I’ve been in homes where the butler’s pantry or the broom closets were larger. It is my one and only bathroom. Do not misunderstand me. I am not envious of people with larger bathrooms or more bathrooms. It is just right for me. And for people who asked me for years how I could get by living in a house with only one bathroom I’d wonder how many bathrooms they thought one person needed. The times when I’ve had grandkids living with me, three people were able to get by with one bathroom. ...

PTI study focuses on preforms and humidity logo-pn-color logo-pn-color

Time is not just the enemy of mankind as new research shows older PET preforms are more difficult to process into new containers. The work by Plastic Technologies Inc. of Holland, Ohio, looks at preforms for both 20-ounce and 2-liter bottles stored for more than a year. The bottom line is that PET preforms, because they absorb moisture while being stored, create more problems as time pass, the research and development firm said. New preforms have close to 0 parts per million of moisture, but preforms stored over time or in what PTI calls “extremely humid conditions” can contain up to 10,000 ppm of moisture, PTI said in a new white paper examining the issue. PTI studied preforms with 3,000 ppm, which is typical in preforms that are stored from three to six months in moderate humidity conditions. “Our plant support personnel were frequently being asked what storage duration was acceptable for preforms and what problems can present themselves during longer storage periods,” Sumit Mukherjee, PTI chief technology officer, said in a statement. The company’s goal was to lower the moisture level to 200 ppm with “relatively low temperature to minimize ...

[Don] bought some off-brand Bluetooth earbuds online that actually sound pretty good. But while it’s true

[Don] bought some off-brand Bluetooth earbuds online that actually sound pretty good. But while it’s true that they don’t require wires for listening to tunes, the little storage/charging box they sleep in definitely has a micro USB port around back. Ergo, they are not truly wireless. So [Don] took it upon himself to finish what the manufacturer started. Because it’s 2019, and words have meaning. Finally, he had a use for that Qi charger he’s had lying around since the Galaxy S5 era. [Don] pried the earbud case open with a guitar pick and found a nicely laid-out charging circuit board without any black goop. Once he located ground and Vcc pads, it was just a matter of performing a bit of surgery on the coil’s pins so he could solder wires there instead. Miraculously, the Qi coil fit perfectly inside the bottom of the case and the plastic is thin enough that it doesn’t interfere with the charging. Want to try it for yourself? [Don]’s done an excellent job of documenting this hack, with clear pictures of every step. Soon you’ll be able to rid yourself of all those pesky USB cables. Of course, [Don] still has to plug the charging base into the wall. If he ever wanted to add another...

When You Need a Sensible Tow Vehicle: Cab-Over Ford With Nowhere-Near-Finished Toronado FWD Drivetrain Swap

It’s always good to have friends with way crazier more ambitious vehicular projects than one’s own not-making-much-forward-progress Hell Projects. Rich, captain of the Rocket Surgery Racing mid-VW-engined Renault 4CV, has a snake pit cornucopia of such projects at his place, not far from Chez Murilee in Denver. Rich, last seen by TTAC readers helping me Nader-ize the brakes on my van, has big racing plans for 2012… and for that he needs a flatbed truck that can haul a race car and tow a camping trailer. Oh, and it also has to be a beautiful vintage machine, yet capable of prodigious load capacity. The original plan was to use the ’47 Ford pickup he bought at the amazing Seven Sons Auto Wrecking auction last winter, but then this fine vehicle danced into his field of vision.I don’t know the first thing about non-light-duty Ford trucks, but I have a vague recollection that this is a ’46. Early postwar, at any rate. For power, it has a 1969 Oldsmobile Toronado 455 front-drive setup. The engine and suspension are installed, sort of, but the steering system hasn’t been worked out yet. This setup worked just fine on the front-wheel-drive GMC motorhomes of the 1970s, and it should wor...

Stats reveal the effect Ninja has had on Mixer so far

A new report reveals that people are spending less time watching Mixer streams than they were before Tyler ’Ninja’ Blevins became exclusive to the platform, but have seen massive increases in the number of channels broadcasting on the site. The report, which focuses on streaming analytics across Twitch, Mixer and YouTube Gaming for Q3 of 2019, has been released today, giving fans of the platform and those in the industry a look at how the acquisition of Ninja has affected Mixer, and their rivals. If the exclusive signing of the streamer was designed to encourage more users to the platform, then things are looking good for the Microsoft-owned platform, as between Q2 and Q3, the platform has seen an increase from 1.96 million unique channels to 3.92m, a massive leap in just three months. Over time, this may well prove to be huge, if these streamers can grow in popularity and bring even more eyes to the site. The most interesting statistic in the effort to bring more viewers to Microsoft’s streaming platform is in the number of hours watched, which has dropped by 10.6% quarter over quarter despite Ninja’s exclusivity deal starting at the beginning of August. This...

For as long as I’ve known her, she has wowed me with her crisp hospital corners,

For as long as I’ve known her, she has wowed me with her crisp hospital corners, concealed sticky tape and artful ribboning. It’s her thing, so much so, she organises pre-Christmas wrapping trips away laden with rolls of paper, friffery and ephemera to focus on her craft with others equally talented in all things wrapping. They’re focused, they’ve trained and they wow every year. Here’s what I’ve learned from her. First gather your materials. I prefer low-cost brown paper – it’s usually heavier than printed wrapping paper, so easier to wrangle, and looks ‘old school package from the Postie’ cool. Wrap special gifts in tissue first – not the blow your nose type, but a few sheets of bright crisp coloured gift wrap tissue. I often use washi tapes in colours or patterns, but invisible or clear is the preferred weapon of choice when battling those folds and joins.  For the...
