Late in the spring of 1890, two Roman Catholic nuns, Sister M. Michael Cummings and Sister

Late in the spring of 1890, two Roman Catholic nuns, Sister M. Michael Cummings and Sister M. Alphonsus Fitzpatrick, arrived in San Diego to build a hospital. They were accompanied by the bishop of the diocese, the Right Reverend Francis Mora, and together the three met with Father Ubach, who had established the first Catholic church in New San Diego. The priest had been trying for some time to bring the Sisters of Mercy to town. Saint Joseph’s Hospital, 6th and University, 1898. “Picturesquely situated on an eminence near where the road begins to descend into the historic Mission Valley….” “Father Ubach, exultant to have secured Sisters of Mercy at long last, conducted the search for suitable property” the “Sisters of Mercy in San Diego” records. “A sheltered place on University Heights was recommended by the clergymen, but neither they nor the Sisters had the means available to purchase the property. The good bishop gave Mother Michael the following autograph endorsement to certify her status: Father Ubach. “When Mother Michael took legal steps to have the hospital incorporated in the name of the Sisters, Father Ubach’s attitude began to change. Mother M. Mic...

NVIDIA SHIELD TV (2019) Review: Android TV meets AI upscaling magic

For something intended to be hidden out of sight, the NVIDIA SHIELD TV (2019) sure is a funny shape. Then again, after four years solidifying its reputation as the go-to Android TV box, perhaps NVIDIA’s brand new SHIELD TV is allowed to step outside the lines a little. One thing’s for sure: with a new AI-powered upscaler, lower sticker price, and brand new remote, there’s more to this 2019 model than just a fresh shape. First thing’s first: the shape isn’t an accident. While the SHIELD TV Pro, which launches alongside this model, looks much like its predecessor, NVIDIA had different goals for its mass-market version. The pass-through design – with power and gigabit ethernet on one end, and HDMI-CEC on the other – means it can sit among the rest of the unruly cables behind your A/V center. However, unlike HDMI stick designs, you won’t get the wireless-interfering side-effect of having a TV blocking your WiFi. Inside there’s a new NVIDIA Tegra X1+ chipset, which the company says is up to 25-percent faster than the old Tegra X1. It’s paired with 2GB of memory and 8GB of storage, and there’s a microSD slot to add to the latter. The SHIELD TV Pro gets 3GB of memory and 16GB of stora...

Oh dear, there is a new technology called Industrial Computer Tomography and they pretend it can

Oh dear, there is a new technology called Industrial Computer Tomography and they pretend it can measure. Didn’t we have exactly the same situation about 20 years ago? There were those guys that used light for metrology. Few people believed in it, and yet many years later we find them in every company all the way down to the shop floor. White light scanning. There is norms for it, and very few people still doubt that you cannot measure with them any more. Great advantages and a few disadvantages made them state of the art, and thousands with metrology quality are sold every year from major companies worldwide. The technology even moved into the consumer area. Now here we are, Industrial Computer Tomographs move into the focus of many companies. So why is that and how does that work, what’s the advantages? A  CT uses an X-Ray Source and the materials absorption to create a 3 dimensional model of the product from a series of projection images. So far there is no major difference to a medical CT. Only that the specimen is moving, whilst the medical solution needs to move the X-ray source and detector. CT’s with metrology quality exist only since about 10 years, they consist of the ...

GERMANY: Chiller manufacturer Engie Refrigeration has increased its test bed capacity to 6MW, making it one

GERMANY: Chiller manufacturer Engie Refrigeration has increased its test bed capacity to 6MW, making it one of the largest such facilities in Europe. The four test beds installed at its headquarters in Lindau on Lake Constance provide real-time visualisation of all performance, temperatures, pressures and flow rates data for internal development processes and customer approvals.  Innovative automation and control technology is said to guarantee a temperature-stable control of the operating points. The test bed is also said to be highly automated, reducing the necessary set-up and test times to a minimum. “With this new test bed, Engie Refrigeration is perfectly set up to examine all chillers from our product portfolio for performance and efficiency in a variety of scenarios,” commented Jochen Hornung, managing director at Engie Refrigeration. “We will focus on particularly powerful chillers and refrigeration systems, as demand for such machines is growing steadily on the international market.” The facility includes two test beds for water-cooled chillers with a refrigeration capacity of up to 1.5MW. These can be equipped with an additional testing facility for glycol chillers wi...

Ever wanted to add a nice, crisp logo, a barcode or graphic to your prints? Colorfabb

Ever wanted to add a nice, crisp logo, a barcode or graphic to your prints? Colorfabb Laser Marking PLA has you covered. Let’s take a look! Colorfabb Laser Marking PLA has just been released, adding new possibilities to FDM 3D printing around the globe. At first glance, the material looks like any other PLA. For the most part, print settings and material qualities should be the same. However, Colorfabb has mixed in a laser-sensitive additive that will work with a range of laser wavelengths. This additive allows the material to be laser marked after printing. This means that a printed part can be transferred to a laser etching/marking machine, and have a 2D image, text or graphic printed directly on its surface. While it is possible to cut or etch 3D printed parts in a variety of materials, it was not previously possible to mark in the same way as on wood (except perhaps with a “wood” PLA — but this has not yet been reliably documented). The difference is that instead of melting or removing material, marking will only discolor the surface. For all owning both a 3D printer and a laser engraver, this material provides a new option for more professional parts and products. Pri...

The Oktoberfest in 108 Mile Ranch, organized by the 108 Lions, will have a different menu

The Oktoberfest in 108 Mile Ranch, organized by the 108 Lions, will have a different menu this year, according to Ingrid Meyer, one of the organizers. “We’re gonna do, this year, schnitzel, bavarian meatloaf and the German style potato salad and of course the pretzels and we’re going to have… the plum cake and apple cake for dessert.” There will be four people making life music by the South Tyrolean Yodel Duo as well of plenty of games such as the “nailing game.” Other games will include a beer stein holding contest, during contestants will have to hold a stein filled with water as long as they can, explains Meyer. With a laugh, she says they don’t really watch the time. “You’d be surprised how many ladies are actually really strong. I could never do that. The nailing game [was] won by a lady last year I think as well.” She thanks Country Prime Meats for donating the door and winning prizes as well as the Lac la Hache Bakery for donating the pretzels and the dessert. Jackson’s Social Club and Brew House will be providing the beer. People should come out just to have a good time and maybe do some dancing, says Meyer, adding that she’s expecting a 100 people to come out for sure....
